It's a long story Baron, but I have a friend who has lost their life savings by banking with Kaupthing, Singer and Friedlander on the Isle of Man. They paid UK taxes and, because they worked abroad and didn't have a permanent address in the UK, they had to bank offshore if they wanted to save in sterling.
