Ireland votes again on the Lisbon Treaty in a few weeks time because they didn't vote the 'right' way the first time round.
The way the referendum rules have been manipulated is a scandal. Campaign groups have to stick to strict limits on donations while companies or individual can spend as much as they like promoting their opinion.
As Richard states 'Vested interests from Ireland an abroad can therefore spend millions attempting to influence how Irish people vote on 2 October'.
After yesterday announcement from Michael O'Leary that he intends to support the YES campaign by donating €500,000 for advertising and cheap airline seats, today the US multinational Intel took out a full page ad in the Irish Times to also promote the YES vote. According to Richard, Intel's move is designed to impress the EU commission as it is presently facing a fine of over €1 billion under EU anti-trust legislation.
Of course these 'tactics' are also used to intimidate the smaller NO campaign supporters. I would like to remind them that, at the last Scottish elections and for years before then, the MSM said the SNP would never achieve power in Scotland. The other 3 parties were all more substantially funded by their London-based parties and the SNP were the 'small' party. I agree Soutar's donation made a massive difference to their coffers, but it was the party faithful who continued to think positive and run a positive campaign. You know the result.
I would like to see a NO vote if only for the reason that David Cameron would then be forced to hold a referendum in the UK. Many people feel strongly about the EU and were promised a say in the Lisbon Treaty, only for our present PM to nip over and sign it late at night in the hope nobody would notice.
Another reason I support a NO vote is because I detest bullies.

Just highlighted this as well. I wrote to my Lib Dem MP about this last year as he had broken his promise to demand a Referendum, You can imagine what a load of tosh he replied.
If this gets through with a yes that is Tony Blair 1 step closer to becoming the first EU president................god forbid!!!!!!
It really does seem as though blogging might be able to play a part in this scandal by getting people to realise what is realy going on! Imagine if virtually every sensible blogger in Ireland and The UK hammers home the message that freedom is at stake?
I'm with OR - keep hammering away on this issue otherwise the bastards will walk all over us. FREEDOM.

Maybe it is just me, but I think that even if I was strongly in favor and had voted yes, if someone came back and said in effect "we did not get the right result we need to vote again" I think I would tell them to "GTF"
Well OR, it's worth getting the word spread, if only to give the NO camp a chance.

Dubbie, I think that's one of the main problems the No campaign are having right now. People who voted no just feel insulted I'm told but they're trying hard to make folk use their anger by definitely voting again.
Thats the thing about Europe, if you vote in the wrong way then you have to vote again. Now that Ireland is snookered and almost broke, i suspect they will vote for Europe..

Yes, I think that Spook has it. I heard an article the other day on radio about it, and quite a few said that they had voted 'no' before but now would be voting 'yes' because of the changed circumstances.
I really can't imagine Blair as president of the EU. I mean who on earth wants a man who lied to parliamnet so that America could go in and murder people in Iraq in 'Shock and Awe'? Who wants an America poodle for president?
Who wants a president whose home state doesn't join in many European things, including most importantly, the common currency?
Wo wants a president who made such an unholy mess of running their own state, leaving it in the mess that that cretin left to Brown?

What interests me Tris is how the Uk would vote in a referendum.
It could well be a No but if Ireland vote yes then we'll never know.

Actually he wouldn't as Lisbon would be dead in the water - as legally it is right now. However, Eurotyrants don't believe in the rule of law so Lisbon IS coming whatever the Irish think. The ballots have been counted now all that's left to do is hold the vote.
Sadly I think you are right scunnert. The money being thrown at the Yes campaign is just a front.
