The photograph shows Gus Noble, now president of the Illinois St Andrew Society in Chicago. He will be among the leading lights in the Scottish Diaspora Forum which takes place at Holyrood tomorrow and is open to the public. Tom Devine, the historian and head of diaspora studies centre at Edinburgh University, is the keynote speaker.
The debate will look at the heritage of the Scottish diaspora, the values of Scottish identity and the benefits that this could bring.
The Times article says the event will be televised but I'm struggling to find these details although it will be available on Holyrood TV and starts at 9.15am.
I have great respect for our diaspora. They do so much to promote Scotland in their 'new' countries and many have such an extensive knowledge of Scottish history and traditions that they put me to shame. In fact I have possibly learned more Scottish history from those who have left Scotland for one reason or another, than I ever learned throughout 12 years of schooling. Joining a couple of forums years ago has certainly broadened my understanding of the clan system for example.
This should be a good event as our diaspora always have something interesting to say. Go along if you can and if you can't then watch it on Holyrood TV.
