After a sluggish start, caused by the retiral of many officers, considerable progress has been made and yesterday's figures now suggest that the 1000 officer pledge is likely to be met in time for the next election in 2011. The statistics showed that, at the end of March this year, there were a record number of 17,408 police officers employed across the country. That is 373 more than at the end of December last year and is a rise of 821 from March 2008.
The figures showed that the number of officers had increased in all eight of Scotland's police forces.
Congratulations Mr MacAskill.

Good for you! Wish we could say the same! ;-)
The way The SNP are going may we all become a United Scotland? As long as wearing a kilt is not compulsory. Haggis and whisky, now, on the NHS, that would work. I could still be a "Scottish" oldrightie?
Well done to the government. A piece of co-operation between the SNP and the Tories here that has worked well for the country... and that's the important thing
Tris,
I agree with you aunty Annabel and big Eck are a lot more cosy than people realise.
However from a personal point......would like to have a few more.....but not in traffic!
Or you are funny. You'd be more than welcome to be an 'adopted' Scot and kilt wearing isn't compulsory believe me (or I'd be in the 'must be deported' bracket).
Good though that we're upping the police service.
Indeed Tris.
LotF, are you inferring something the rest of us don't know? Aunty Annabel and Alex? Auch I cannae believe that LotF, I just cannae see Annabel scoffing curry with delight.
Aye TP, another reason for living outside the London bubble :)
