O/T, BBC Radio 4 mentions that the new worldwide ban on Seal products endangers the Sporran industry which has used Seal pelts for 100 years.
Seems the Innuit Community are exempted from the ban and so might be able to rescue this Scottish icon. Just wondered if you had a view on that Subrosa.
Morning banned. I was just talking to the owner of a small kilt and sporran making business the other day about this. Her pelts come from Canada. She's very worried as it means laying off half the factory staff because their main export business is sporrans.
It seems seal skin is lovely to work with as is leather of course but she's going to experiment again with other materials. She's only inherited the business and her father was a great traditionalist so he refused to believe this type of thing would happen.
Like anyone I'm against animal cruelty but I understand seals do need to be culled. Nature is like life, all about balances.
Thanks for high-lighting the entry by "Jess the Dog" regarding the Gurkhas. What the blog did not make clear was that the General quite openly admitted that the Gurkhas were the "cheaper" option and that this was one of the reasons why the British Army were so keen to recruit them.
To be brutally honest as well, a Gurkha being killed would not have the same publicity or impact on the British public as a British soldier being killed.
Thank you for the referral!
A pleasure Dan.
The Innuit exemption seemed to be news to everybody on that Radio 4 show so perhaps your friends business can be saved after all, and the jobs.
Thanks for that banned. I'll go into the shop and speak with her this week and see what progress she's made. (She also has a small factory as I've said).
