Alex Massie's Memories of the Lord

What an amusing anecdote Alex Massie recalls in his recent Spectator post.  Here is his memory of Lord George Foulkes, before he became a Lord and all that.

" .....This was an evening that culminated with the discovery of George Foulkes slumped unconscious in the cloakroom. In fact, the noble lord (as he is now) had made a kind of nest for himself, using punters' jackets to cushion his comfortably-sized frame and, once awoken, needed a pair of helpers to guide him back to his hotel. Mr Foulkes had been addressing the Dubin University Soccer Appreciation Society and refreshments had been served. Before retiring to the cloakroom he had been in fine voice, belting out the Hearts song while lurching across the dance floor to the bemusement and, it must be said, amusement of all present. Unlike some of the society's guests, however, Mr Foulkes did not sleep with any of the members."

That's quite tame compared to the infamous Foulkes tippling session at a particular Scottish Whisky Association tasting in 1993...

Lest we forget!

Subrosa, my spirits lifted when I read the headline. I thought my noble Lord had kicked the bucket.

Thank you Lallands. I'm pleased to have that for future reference.

Oh Lochnager, so sorry to disappoint. I'm not quite sure George's spirits will be lifted though.

"He vowed not to drink whisky again."

Wonder how that pledge is going?

Subrosa,

Morning madame, he is a disgrace to himself, and a gobshyte usually when Liebore wheel him out to defend them, well I won't go on but I'm certain we haven't heard the last of his social faux pas!

subrosa,

Is "Gotta pick a pocket or two" a "Hearts song"? This is outrageous behaviour which makes fiddling expenses pale into insignifance. Is it any coincidence that he held positions in organisations guilty of putting Hearts FC and UK tax-payers into debt? He should be charged and brought in front of Milord Spooks of Leith. I suspect that he won't see "sunshine" for a few years.

'Not very well' could be the answer Monty.

Morning CD. Aye, I bet there are a few folk who could make a bit of money from their Foulkes memories.

I agree with you Brownlie, the sun never shines in Leith, or perhaps I've just not noticed :)
