I remember reading a newspaper report from the turn of the century about a man who was charged with flashing and waving his worldly goods around on Wimbledom Common. The quaintly worded police report said that when approached and cautioned the man denied it. "I did not do it" he ejaculated.

When was that Brownlie? Was it a desperate MP last week?

Remember being told this story by old Perthshire policeman (long dead).

He was serving in Dunkeld in his youth and an old lady brought in a £5 note she had found on street. Another young PC dealt with her and kept note in his drawer. Some time later she returned to ask what had happened and when it transpired that the note was still in his drawer he was dismissed.

Tough justice but high standards of probity were expected.
