HOMES FOR HEROES

This week the Courier reported a Homes for Heroes campaign was granted planning permission for 10 properties in Scone, Perthshire, which will house disabled ex-service personnel.  The application to build the specialised properties was made by the Scottish Veterans Garden City Association in conjunction with house builders A & J Stephen.  Having lived in a Stephens home myself once, I know the homes will be of excellent quality and the finishes second to none.

The project is part of a national campaign to increase the number of properties available to disabled ex-servicemen and women, funded by their first appeal since just after the second world war.

In addition to the army, navy and RAF, former members of the merchant navy, police and fire service are eligible to apply for SVGCA homes.  The chairman of the local branch of the charity said the properties will take the total number in Perth and Kinross to 28 and £280,000 has already been raised for the Scone plan.  "Sadly we're now seeing the servicemen and women who fought in the first Gulf War in the early 1990s and they are probably the ones who will be applying to us in the greatest numbers."

Seven letters of objection were received from residents, citing the impact on residential amenity and Scone Old Parish Church, road safety issues and loss of open space as reasons to reject the plans.  Who are these people?  NIMBYS I presume.

That these folks have tae rely on charity for housing is a bluidy disgrace. Where is the government who sent them out to risk life and limb? Have they nae sense ae responsibility or obligation?

It's a disgrace right enough scunnert, but it is good to see a 'proper' charity working. See this page for them: http://www.housesforheroes.org.uk/main/page_about_us.html

I see Alex Salmond a strong supporter so perhaps he'll stick a few £s into their funds.

Isn't it amazing all these homes in Scotland are run by 2 full-time and one part-time staff based in Edinburgh and all the members of the board are unpaid. Time all charities were like this.

Ok me time.
I did the first gulf war and have done 2 tours of Afghanistan in civillian role (Yes call me what you like).
But the fact is without this ex-servicemen would be in a much worse state. At least this project attempts to catch the suffering of a few %.
The lack of care, respect, even comon courtesy our servicemen and women receive from our government is itself beyond that of any other nation in the civillised world (civillised in inverted commas).

I hate to bag a drum here but please look at www.helpforheroes.org.uk i shove a few quid here myself.

Our troops, airmen and sailors not to mention the 1000's of civvy support staff blindly follow orders and instructions. They may well disagree with policy but they put that to the back of their minds and carryout their duty with skill, dilligence and above all without favour.

Our government is a F&^%$ing disgrace abd I for one am ashamed.

If you are of a particular religious or political persuassion and wish to discuss this with me further make yourself known.
I have video and photos that will make your head spin.

Sorry Subrosa rant over

Hey Last of the Few I understand completely where you're coming from so don't apologise to me. I could rant on and on too but I have to think about others so I support as best as I can by highlighting military issues.

No government has treated our forces with any respect but they'll crawl to the wishes of the police and fire service - that angers me.

It's a good cause help for heroes. I haven't donated there as yet because it's usually Erskine Hospital which gets my few extra £s.
