DUNFERMLINE BS - THE DEMISE

NOW THE

It's done and dusted, in fact it's possibly been done for months and only dusted today.  All the lies have been told and the media has given hours of air-time today to Gordon Brown and his associates, all of whom have had a ball telling the Scots how badly run our biggest building society has been. Two men spoke against it and they should be applauded for their efforts.

The underlying message of course was that Scots are incapable of running anything successfully. I actually more or less agree with that message believe it or not.  I say more or less and it is far less, but the devious and deceiving Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling have proved just how badly some Scots are at running anything, in fact they've been far more successful ruining rather than running the UK.

All is not lost however, we can rebuild (who said that, I've forgotten).  If the Scots woke up and realised Scotland has been asset stripped, then we could do something.  Gordon Brown has left a blank canvas so we can begin to plan a Scotland we want to live in.  If enough people voted for that then Westminster couldn't stop us.  Moridura mentions other factors in his eloquent post.

I've been to the new NW to withdraw my savings and they are now happily settled in a Scottish Building Society account.  Rather a pleasant experience it has been too, as the local agent is my own friendly lawyer's office, so a cup of tea was part of the deal.  Maybe they'll grow enough to take over the old HBOS office in town who knows. The new NW branch I used was far busier than usual with people withdrawing savings.  I expect some were destined for underneath the floorboards if I overheard correctly.

I shall do a post later about the FSA and the UK treasury and how Alistair Darling has had thousands of emails and letters.  He has not replied to one but that's another story.

I would love to see everybody withdraw their money from Gordon Brown owned banks. I have!

Oldrightie,

We own them!!!!

Not the deluded being that is the P.M.

Do you not think we are then cutting our noses off to spite our faces.

As long as the bank trades we may pay some debt back.
It stops trading we are "cattle trucked"

I'm sorry LOTF, I've taken mine out of the Dunfermline and it doesn't trouble me in the least. I'd rather see the old institution of Scottish Building Society thrive than contribute more than I need towards Brown and Darling's destruction of Scotland.

... and Brown and Darling's destruction of England. We don't want them either!

Just posted about the FSA on my blog, and asked why criminal charges against Goodwin are not forthcoming?

Darling and Brown can wait untill the GE, where Comedy Dave and Boy George await to take over.

Deppression sets in.

Subrosa,

You let sentiment get in the way of economic reality - logic. I heard all of Darling in the Commons today and all the replies, and at no point did he say or did he impy Scots ar rubbish at running things - he is one you might have noticed as is the PM and a good slice of the cabinet.(or do they not count in your eyes?)

Instead he sounded to me very sympathetic, but not a mug.

Also look at what the Scottish Governmet is saying - they are very supportive of the UK government: Having be spun along for a few month it now realises Jim fauld and co are either telling porkies or are so out of touch they dont even knw what the socity they were meant to be running actually owed.

Indeed I think you might consider it is not Draling or te FSA, but Jim Faulds that has at least tried to take the Scottish Government ( and frankly you) for a mug, by playing a somewhat belated and Id say dishonest Scottish card.

A "scottish" building so society - so scottish it invested £11 million of Scottish savers money in some disaterous ( already bust when they invested in it) Yorkshire based IT adventure. So scottish it speculated with Scottish savers money on commercial property with no real clue as to what it was doing

And the FSA has many faults, but it can now I hope spot a chancer a mile off - someone in negotioation with them and simualtaneously tryin to stike barely constitutional deal with a Scottish Govenrment too keen to belive his "its all the fault of the English" line

Its all the fault of his board and the Executives he has appointed and allowed to ruin a once proud and independent 160 year old institution in less than a yaer.

Get real - Im glad neither darling or Eck wasted money on this shower, and we now have the Nationwide - a top company, very ethical in charge. And it aint "English" - it a mutual, owned by its membership now including the Dunferline savers its just saved. Because yesterday , under the great Jim Faulds, their society and their saving were in reality worth zilch, less than ziltch

Open an account in the Scottish Building Society by all means - but try to ensure its management dont indiulge in the same wrekless gamdles as the Dunferline, or for that matter Nothern Rock did

I just dont buy this Scottish good, English bad mince you unwittingly peddle. We have our chancers too - and in this instance they have just been found out

After sir Fred and co the UK government is at least learning soemthing. You nats seem stil stuck waving flags. Get into the real world - you should be celebrating with the 550 Dunfermline staff Darling has just saved.

No compulsory redundancies for at least three years, all deposits safe, and it can even keep the name.

Not a bad rescue package

And in my book "independence" has to be earned, not guaranteed.

Aye We Can, thank you for your post and the trouble you obviously went to in order to compose it.

I'm a woman, women tend to approach things with a little emotion as well as fact. Makes for a good mix really and avoid lies becoming too common place.

Please don't insult me by suggesting I don't know the PM and a hoard of MPs are Scottish.

I have yet to hear the Westminster speech and Q & As. The tape stops just at the end of the hour to debate military issues.

I see nothing anyone will say will convince you that Brown and Darling are now hell bent on a scorch earth policy in Scotland. That's fine you're perfectly entitled to your opinion.

What about the councils who invested in Icelandic banks? Are they fools and burst too?

AWC, I know more, in the past 6 months about the FSA than you'lll ever know unless you're the boss so don't lecture me on the FSA and their ways.

Oh believe me I have researched the Scottish Building Society and have my lawyer's word that it is a sound business. Where does he get his advice? From the FSA of course! So, nowhere is safe with your money if the treasury and FSA decide otherwise.

I am not anti English and please do not accuse me of such because it's offensive. I am pro Scotland.

Darling hasn't saved anything so don't kid yourself. Nationwide weren't even in the frame 24 hours ago, don't you wonder why?

Oh AWC independence has been earned, well earned and to suggest otherwise shows you have little understanding of Scottish history in the past 50 years.

When you're my age perhaps you'll have a broader outlook about your own country and how it exists in the big world. I do hope so.

OK,

So now it get even more sordid.

BBC Scotland says Scottish Friendly Assurance approached DBS for a chat about a merger.

Could not get a meeting thay say.
Mr Faulds says he had no idea about this.

Then 72 hours after going public Nationwide have a sweetner plus the nice bits.
Tax payer has the bad bits.
Gordon and Ali have a nice wee behind closed doors deal and the problem goes away.
Brand is safe apparently, Jobs are safe apparently.

Well it does not go away, I may be dyslexic, not bloody thick.

Aye LOTF, Newsnicht mentioned the Friendly last night, not any detail though. I've yet to read if anything more has come to light.
