TOLL-FREE TAY A SUCCESS

Today is the first anniversary of the abolition of tolls on the Tay and Forth road bridges.

A year on and Dundee civic and business leaders have expressed the removal as a major boost for Tayside.  The SNP were the first party to support the removal but their motion to have them removed, in February 2007, was defeated 65-58.  When the SNP formed the minority government in May 2007, the first thing Alex Salmond did was to officially end the tolls and the Abolition of Bridge Tolls Bill (Scotland) was passed in December 2007.

Dundee Lord Provost John Letford stated, "The traffic situation has improved at peak times and there is a significant improvement in traffic flows during the evening peak period." The Dundee Courier, which led a strong campaign against the tolls, reports that the end of them has gained appreciation from everyone, not least drivers who save £4 a week.

I didn't take the photo Oldrightie, although I do have a few like it somewhere.

Nothing to do with age - we don't speak about age here! It's just your typing was rubbish earlier :-)

Sorry folks, I thought the 'publish your comment' button was stuck, hence the umpteen number of deletions. Nothing to do with age either!

Age takes it's toll on all of us.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

In response to Oldrightie:

Aye a beautiful place for some, but for many all they see is the ugliness of inner city ghettos that would look more at home in some Soviet industrial wasteland.

Re: tolls

Grand.

subrosa,

The only way I can get to your comments is to right-click the comment and open. Why are you playing so hard-to-get, you little tease?

Brownlie, I've no idea why that is at all, anyone help?

Mind you I enjoy a game of hide and seek don't you ;)

Conan, I thought you'd say "bridge over troubled water" but then you're still an optimist :)

Scunnert, very true. Back in the 50s there was some character about the place and also a friendly atmosphere. Yes I know it was a filthy city because of the industry but it was a community and as a child I could walk anywhere.

Now the centre has road bridge access right through the middle. What other city would do that to spoil such scenery. It could easily have been built west of Kingoodie.

So many housing schemes have been built too and it does look like a ghetto town if you drive off the Kingsway.

Good for Dundee and Fife. Bridge tolls are a thing of the past and hopefuly so is labour.

Thanks, subrosa,

You're easier to get at now!

Why are you and Spooks sticking up pictures of the east of Scotland? Is it part of the Homecoming tourism bid?

I see Tractorstats has been taken off the followers list as well??

I'm sticking up an east of Scotland picture because I live there brownlie!

True about the Tractorstats logo on followers, I've just noticed. That must happen when a blog is closed. Wonder what happened ...
