QUESTION TIME 29 January 2009

I could have cheerfully belted Mr Dimbleby with my handbag if I'd been present in Inverness last night, but I'm rushing ahead, so back to the beginning.

Above is the panel the BBC has advertised for last night's Question Time.  Spot the deliberate mistake.  Yes, yet again, the labour party representative Ian Gray wasn't there.  His place was taken, yet again, by Charlie Falconer a leading light in the labour party in Scotland, or Tony Blair's best pal. He was resurrected every time Wendy chickened out of the programme (twice at least) and he's still willing. Of course David's his pal so he knew he'd be given an easy time, plus I'm informed from a reliable source, Charlie has a passion for BBC canapes.

Why would I have belted David Dimbleby with my handbag?  A simple reason really - his obvious dislike of Nicola Sturgeon.  Once more Nicola was sidelined and on one occasion he was downright rude.  After permitting his pal Charlie to rambled on, he asked Nicola her view then cut her short.  This happened twice. She had about one third of the airtime given to Charlie Falconer.  Nicola turns up time after time for this programme and gives a solid, professional performance and doesn't not deserve this biased treatment from David Dimbleby, nobody does.

Michael Gove and Jo Swinson were the other politicians present, specially shipped in from Westminster and trying extremely hard to sound Scots.  Why aren't MSPs (the SNP excepted) invited onto this programme?  There are 82 of them and I thought it was their duty to attend such events if invited, as they are in the public interest.

The highlight for me was when David Dimbleby addressed Hardeep Kohli then immediately interrupted him.  Hardeep's response was, "You're in my country now so I'm going to speak."  So must all of us.

Nicola did start to get a head of stem going..bit like an old train drawing out of a station over the snp Budget which wasn't what the question addressed.

you are right about local Scottish politicians and to be fair
i don't belive Charlie Falconer is much of a vote winner for the labour party.

perhaps thats why he was chosen by a snp supporting bbc producer..Umm

Niko, you can't say Charlie Falconer's a labour vote winner! You hit the beer early? That's the man who laughed when people complained about his £270 a roll wallpaper for his grace and favour house.

Shameful not one other labour MSP replaced the headmaster. More shameful the headmaster decided not to come - he must have had a text from his boss Jim.

How's the nursing going? Fed up yet? lol

Oldrightie, it's getting worse I think don't you?

Unfortunately Sky are beginning to behave in a similar manner so we're kind of restricted for news.

All part of the dumbing down, loss of freedoms which are contained in the instructions to create this New World Order.

Scares me it does. Seriously scares me.

Dimbleby is the face of the BBC, typical labour tripe. I never saw the program last night but from what i have read its nothing new that the BBC gives labour an easy ride. Iain Grey would have been torn to shreds if he went on air.

super rosa,

Don't be scared, little one, Nikos will be high up in the new order and will take you under his wing and light the final cigarette for you.

Jo Swinson is my MP and is trotted out for the Libs whenever Question Time comes to Scotland.

I must admit that she is a huge improvement over Sam Galbraith. Mike Watson, yes, of curtain fame, told me once that Sam was the most pathetic MP in Scotland and he had some pretty stiff competition at the time.

Before that we had Michael Hirst, a Tory who was a lot more left wing than Sam but got driven out by the 'dirty tricks' brigade.

Some things never change, eh, Nikos??

Brownlie, you sooth my troubled brow.

I wasn't digging at Jo Swinson, the lassie has come sensible comments at times, but my dig was at the fact that no libdem MSP was on the programme. Jo doesn't know the ins and outs of the Scottish Parliament.

Sam Galbraith got by because he was a doctor and of course doctors, in those days, were revered.

Spook, you didn't miss much last night. It was so stage-managed it was next to boring. Except the bloke with the bunnet and earring managed to slip through the cordon and say his piece!

Is the spell check working now Spook?

The dumbing down - aye. Here we are at the start of a global depression caused by bankers and what do we do? We give them more money. If this economic apocalypse had been caused by unions ... hmm? It would have been a very different response - oh yes.

We would've had arrests and trials and very long gaol sentences by now. Unions would be banned as terrorist organizations, and their members put on a list somewhere (they probably already are).

Dumb and dumber.

It's all part of the New World Order scunnert. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's not a conspiracy any more, it's becoming a reality.

Our freedoms are being erradicated far quicker than I ever thought.

We have a madman in charge of the country.

Subrosa - I think you're being unfair on Charlie Falconer; it was Derry Irvine - Lord Irvine of Lair - who got the fancy wallpaper courtesy of the taxpayer!!

subrosa said...

Stuart, now I think of it I know you're right. Thanks for that. Both men look similar to me with the combination of smugness and pomposity.

Charlie was made a Lord because Tony needed him to hold his hand, I think that's right.

Really chuffed to find this blog. I'm a teacher from Glasgow very interested in politics, sick to death of New Labour and positively apoplectic about Gordon Brown and his pious posturing.
Have you heard by the way that Dimbleby was a member of the Bullendon? Saw that on the web somewhere and thought it was interesting.

Salmondnet said...

Yep. Irvine & Falconer are easily confused. Interchangeable Scottish carpetbaggers. Hurry up and vote for independence, then you can have them all back. Won't that be great?

subrosa said...

Hello salmondnet, welcome. Didn't you know that none of 'them' actually reside in Scotland? They only have second homes here which taxpayers subsidise.

No, let them stay with the British establishment. After all many of them have paid big money to rid themselves of their Scots accents.

Any politician who refuses to say England and Scotland but insists on using the term Britain isn't my cup of tea.

It's an insult to both countries to lump us together. But isn't that what they want as part of the New World Order?

Wilma, as a teacher you'll be busy in the week but if you wanted to do a weekend blog how about 'Wilma's Weekend Wail'?

I'm sure you could do far better but that just popped into my mind.

The more people (and we need more women) who blog, the more influence this technology will have on our polticians. They read them you know, especially if you get a mention on the likes of Iain Dale (grin).

Aye Wilma, David Dimbleby was a member of the Bullingdon Club. Says so in Wikipedia. Guess which party he votes for then? :)

I'm afraid you failed the objectivity test. Badly.

Seriously, though, both Derry Irvine and Charlie Falconer were Lord Chancellor, which perhaps explains the confusion. The latter abolished the post, of course.

On the question of objectivity, I think I'm a good bit more balance than you - I think ALL politicians are smug and pompous ;0)

subrosa said...

Oh Stuart, where would I be without you to keep my head out of the clouds?

There is something in what you say. Wouldn't you be smug if your bank account was for a few weeks work of pounding the streets and pressing the flesh? Not all are pompous though. I wouldn't class John Swinney as pompous for example.

My up and coming star is that young fellow in the Tories, Derek Brownlie. He's going places that lad and although I've never met him, I wouldn't say he's pompous. You'll disagree of course :-)

Stuart Winton said...

Och, I was just joking, hence my smiley.

But I'm increasinly wondering how you manage to reconcile your support for the SNP AND the Tories, like Jess the Dog?

subrosa said...

Stuart, I'm happy supporting any party which I think can deliver a better Scotland. It's certainly not difficult for me to accept well thought out policies from any party in the Scottish Parliament - and promote them.

My opinion won't change the way our politicians behave Stuart, but at least I can give credit where credit's due.

The tory policy of doing up town centres is pretty rich really. They were the ones who destroyed town centres, well they did in my town and sadly it's never recovered.

The SNP noticed it was something the public, all over Scotland, were mentioning so took it on board (you know how they just love popular polities), but it hasn't cost much and I've yet to see any policy detail (out of lack of interest here).

The reason I comment to James about the Greens is that I actually did take a lot of trouble to find out the details of their policy as I was in need of changing my heating boiler (or system). That's why I can speak about that with confidence.

Are you calling me a Tartan Tory? lol

Or perhaps you think our town centres will become like Swiss town centres within a couple of years? Dream on...

Let me mention two words about our town centre problems : Tesco Labour

Stuart Winton said...

Yes, and I doubt if Tesco's dominance would change whichever party was in power.

subrosa said...

Sadly you may well be right Stuart. At one time I thought it would be the Sainsbury crowd which would dominate.
