Wrap Up Warm and Nip Outside Tonight or Tomorrow Night

Some of you may have missed this article in the Times today. Tonight (and tomorrow night) you may be lucky to see the most spectacular meteor shower of the year.

The Geminid meteor shower appears every year about this time and is our best shooting star display, with more than 100 meteors appearing each hour. This year's spectacle is especially good because it is close to a new moon so there is no moonlight to interfere with the views.

The main problem, apart from the cold, is likely to be low cloud or fog particularly in eastern regions.

There's low cloud here today but I'm still going to dig my thermals out and see if there's a gap in the cloud before I go to bed - it'll be a break from the hand-cramping task of writing Christmas cards.

The Geminids are especially easy to see because they appear anytime from 8pm, rising to a peak sometime between 10pm and dawn.

Oh Dear SR - I can hardly see across the street, here in tram city, never mind the heavens. Mist all day and cold with it

Auch what a shame Dram, it's patchy here. Cross your fingers - it may be better tomorrow night.

I'll let you know if I see anything.

Bah. It's fogged over again here. Always seems to happen when there's something interesting to see.

Hi SR
Can't even see the end of the street, never mind the sky, unfortunately, still there is always tomorrow night.
Might even be above freezing.....!

Rosie, I would suggest there are shooting stars over Dundee most Saturday nights!

Auch that's a pest Apogee. Same up in Aberdeen Leg Iron says. Maybe better tomorrow. It is cold mind you, 3 minutes at a time outside here!

DL, I'm told there's a connection with that and cheap beer. :)

If anyone remembers the famous hole in the Ozone Layer and the imminent frying tonight of the whole human race then they should be interested in a Ch4 documentary in the Equinox series.

It is 6 YouTube videos long and if you have ADS or need to do something else as well, just watch Vid 5.

Seems to me that Global Warming and CO2 is the bastard offspring of the hole in the ozone layer.

It is not the original CH4 doc edition but the version put out by SBS, an Australian network.

I noticed an argument the other day that someone had suggested that the hole in the ozone layer accounts for increased Antarctic ice formation.

You couldn't make this up.
