I have quite a wide range of interests but in this article we were focusing on this particular subject. As far as I can see the only difference EU membership makes toi smaller countries like Slovakia, Slovenia etc is that part of their political elites climb aboard the EU gravy train and are as thoroughly cut off from the ordinary folk as all others in the Brussels bubble.

Sorry to be so brief. Why couldn't England be a powerhouse similar to Germany? The reason is purely political because we no longer encourage manufacturing.

I should hope that the Scots know that each and every one of them counts too. Whatever his personal opinions (and he is, let's face it, a very enthusiastic EUrophile by his actions up till last week), he knows - who better - how large is the percentage of UK tax revenues that comes from the City of London. He'd be mad to put it at risk for the sake of wee Sarko (for it is he, is it not, who is determined to destroy the City?).

Also, having once stirred up public opinion in England with his "veto", he may find that he is now riding a tiger. He will try to get off it, but may discover that's not possible.

As for Scotland, she won't get much say anyway: remaining in the UK, she would be overpowered and outvoted by England whenever it mattered; leaving the UK but staying in the EU, she would be ignored and sidelined by the big boys, ending up without about as much influence as Latvia or Estonia.

If only the SNP had the courage of their convictions to go for real independence - like Iceland; but they don't.Weekend Yachtsmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04262853091154005651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116690042850060767.post-15698171556039510732011-12-20T14:41:21.214+00:002011-12-20T14:41:21.214+00:00It's a pretty one sided article, but I do acce...It's a pretty one sided article, but I do accept the premise that Britain may be on the way out of the EU because of David Cameron.

I don't know whether Scotland should be in or out, & I don't think there is any necessity for the SNP to finalise their policies whilst the situation is so fluid.

However if David Cameron rips us out of the EU to pacify the City & his own backbenchers then Scots will not get a choice in the matter.Observerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08529106853098097239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8116690042850060767.post-51018488913671498992011-12-20T12:45:55.023+00:002011-12-20T12:45:55.023+00:00“Britain's Exit From The EU Is Now (Almost) Ce...“Britain's Exit From The EU Is Now (Almost) Certain”

Your title says it all - you are 'almost' certain – you are not 'totally' certain – therefore you must be uncertain.

Compelling as your argument may be, it is just that – merely a particular, but strongly held, point of view within the current debate. It's a bit like saying if Germany can be an industrial powerhouse then England can, but it can't, or at least it isn't.

Iceland is small, and of course totally unimportant in world terms, and it knows it. Britain is massive in comparison (I'm talking population size), relatively unimportant, but hasn't yet realised it.

Icelanders know that each and every one of them counts; what they do, their contribution matters. Britain's know that each one of them has never mattered, and still doesn't. Only those and such as those matter.

There's a feeling of pride and involvement in Iceland that just doesn't exist in the UK.

London is a million miles away from most of us, and the people who run the country are so separated from the us "ordinary hard working families up and down the country", that we don't feel involved at all.

There is no democracy: An hereditary head of state, a house of parliament made up of aristos, churchmen, failed politicos and placemen. And another house elected by FPTP and whipped into shape by people who would break marriages to have their parties way.

Iceland, on the other hand has a president who shops in Reykjavik, and a parliament which is democratically elected. Most of all, it is close to them. They know each other. They are the same people.

Small countries, and well run ones have that.

Oh yes, the Brits bristle with indignation when a foreigner tells them what to do, and they will tell you that Britian is the best country in the world, bar none, but that's more or less where it ends for the majority. Don't ask them to give a bit more for the state, for nothing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
